Animal Intake
UPDATED INTAKE POLICY FOR OUT OF COUNTY
Due to our current capacity, we regret to inform you that we can only accept animals from within Nodaway County. Our kennels for out of county animals are full, and we simply do not have the space to accommodate animals from outside the county at this time.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to provide the best care for our current residents.
Thank you for helping us make a difference in our community!
For any questions or concerns, please contact us directly at newnodawayhumanesociety@gmail.com.
Stray Animals
The New Nodaway Humane Society is contracted with the cities of Barnard, Burlington Junction, Hopkins, Maryville, Pickering and Skidmore to provide animal control. We provide animal control as needed to Ravenwood and Graham — meaning the mayor or city contact can request our service.
In general, animal control means we will respond to cases of abuse and at-large dogs. Animal control does not include stray cats unless there is an city ordinance regarding at-large cats.
Stray animals found from a non-serviced city or from outside the county are subject to intake fees.
We follow a mandatory 5 business day holding period for all stray animals to give owners time to find their lost pet. If an owner has been identified, we allow 10 business days to claim before placing the animal up for adoption. When claiming, owners should expect to pay a $20 processing fee plus $10 per day for care while at the shelter.
Owner Surrender
We accept owner surrender animals by appointment only to ensure we have the appropriate space and accommodations for the animals coming in. Please complete the owner surrender form (see below) and return to newnodawayhumanesociety@gmail.com. This is a REQUEST ONLY, all requests must be approved and an appointment scheduled.
DO NOT ABANDON YOUR PET. This is a felony and our security cameras will see you and you will be prosecuted.
Here’s what to bring with you to your appointment:
All veterinary records
Your pet’s medications
Special food or treats that your pet needs
Your intake fee is payable in cash, credit card or check
Make sure surrendering the animal is your final decision. By surrendering an animal to us, you are relinquishing all rights of ownership to the NNHS and will not be contacted in the future regarding the animal's disposition.
